Geologic Highlights along the Gila River with Bob Scarborough
We'll explore westward to the Kelvin-Ray area and see the first highway bridge over the Gila River (still in use), and review how the town got to be named for Lord Kelvin, and mention the Apache Kid mystery. We'll view a massive though confusing landslide from antiquity, then search for Permian-age fossils in the Black Prince limestone. Lunch along the river, hopefully with water. Then upriver into copper country around the Christmas mine, where we'll find an amazing volcanic dike filled with hornblende and evidence for mass Laramide volcanism. With time, we may drive up the Dripping Spring Valley and its great river terraces, to an overview in the Mescals of the most amazing bed of all, fifty feet of sands deposited at the time of the "Cambrian Explosion" of life. Participants should bring a sack lunch and are responsible for carpooling. Bob Scarborough, M.S., has worked as a geologic and hydrologic consultant for the state of Arizona. For several years he was geologist for the Desert Museum, where he continues to run geology field trips. A one-day trip, Saturday, April 12, 2008 Cost: $30 (AZ residents) For information or to register: Priscilla Barton (CAC): 520-357-2817 Starting May
The Clovis Site at Murray Springs with Bob Scarborough
A trip to Murray Springs, east of Sierra Vista--a major Clovis-age mammoth-kill site dug by Vance Haynes, U. of A. geologist, in the late 1960s, the final report issued just last year. We will explore the place and talk about a strange new piece of science related to this site and the mass animal extinction which is evident here. A quick stop at Kartchner Caverns to point out a major geologic enigma associated with this cave. Lunch at Murray Springs in the midst of one of two Clovis-age village sites known in the United States. Scarborough will discuss different ideas presented about the origin of the Clovis people. Participants should bring a sack lunch and are responsible for carpooling. A one-day trip, Saturday, May 3, 2008 Cost: $30 (AZ residents) For information or to register: Priscilla Barton (CAC): 520-357-2817 Spanish Summer Classes
