Artists in Oracle and Surrounding Communities
"I have always used figures and animals in my work, usually to tell a story. I set up a narrative that lets me comment on actions and motivations. The bear in my paintings is modeled on a life-sized stuffed animal that lives in my studio. He is a stand-in for various human traits and often is the victim of human action."

"Recently, I got interested in portraits -- painting from the real thing, not what is in my head. A portrait is all about an individual. I usually ask someone to pose, then record them in photographs. I like to capture a gesture or expression and to get a close representation. I think a portrait should look into an individual and capture something of their reality -- no editorializing by the artist and no idealizing of the image, just the best you can do to get at the truth."
